Celebrating Excellence: NMSA’s Shining Students and Faculty

Congratulations to NMSA alumna Helena Merlino ’24! She received the Critics’ Choice Award in the High School Category at the New Century Dance Project, a choreographic competition celebrated in Santa Fe. Ms. Merlino presented The Child in the Violin, featuring NMSA dance students Alana Casas Bermudo, Audrie Gonzales-Ellsworth, Gredel Holladay, and Maddie Joseph. We are proud of Ms. Merlino, who was our 2024 Salutatorian and will be attending Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Conservatory in this fall.

Our own Fernando Ramos, Chair of the Dance Department, was a finalist in the Emerging Professional Category with The New Century Dance Project’s New Voices concert, which took place on Saturday, August 4, at the NDI-Dance Barns.

Congratulations to this year’s Supercomputing Challenge team, Elisea Jackson ’25 and Gloria Galassi ’25! Their project, an experiment and computer model on the effects of microplastics on algae, stood out among 33 teams statewide. They won two prestigious awards at the ceremony: Crowd Favorite Best Poster Award -and- Women in STEM Award. Elisea and Gloria’s dedication and hard work truly paid off. Congratulations!

Ana Gershenson ’25 has demonstrated remarkable dedication to her craft. After interning at the Lensic in her sophomore year, she continued to work there as an overhire. Currently, she is employed as an usher at the opera, a position she discovered through NMSA. Additionally, Ana attended St. John’s Summer Academy on a full scholarship, an opportunity available to her as an NMSA student.

Gloria Galassi ’25 has had an exceptional year, highlighted by her participation in the Supercomputing Challenge, where she received notable awards. She also attended the Summer Physics Camp for Young Women (SPCYW) held at NMSA, earning a Certificate of Leadership and Support.

Amelia Proffitt ’27 gained valuable experience this summer as an intern with Santa Fe Classic Theatre. She is involved both backstage and onstage in their production of Twelfth Night: Or What You Will, working alongside local theatre professionals.

Sydney Allen ’27 spent six enriching weeks at Interlochen’s summer theatre program, where she honed her acting skills and deepened her passion for the performing arts.

Alex Kutsko ’26 has been interning backstage at the Santa Fe Playhouse, specializing in wardrobe and costuming for their production of Sunday in the Park with George. His hands-on experience in this role has been invaluable.

Mr. Sigl, one of our Theatre instructors, is showcasing his talent onstage at the Santa Fe Botanical Gardens, playing the role of Malvolio in the Santa Fe Classic Theatre’s production of Twelfth Night. The performances run through August 18th.
